At Crossroads Pregnancy Resource Center, we provide no-cost, confidential appointments where you can learn about abortion procedures, possible side effects, and potential risks. Our team is here to answer questions in a respectful environment so you can make informed choices.
Types of Abortion
Abortion ends a pregnancy through either drugs or a surgical procedure. The method used typically depends on how far along the pregnancy is and other factors, including a woman’s health history.
Medical Abortion (Abortion Pill)
Medical abortion typically involves two drugs. The first, mifepristone, blocks progesterone, a hormone required for the growth and development of the pregnancy. The second, misoprostol, causes the uterus to contract and expel the pregnancy and related tissue.
This method is only FDA-approved through 10 weeks gestation.
Bleeding and cramping will occur. Some women have reported that these side effects were unexpectedly severe, and they were caught off guard by their intensity. Other possible side effects include:
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Diarrhea
- Fever or chills
- Headache
- Fatigue
Possible risks include:
- Heavy or prolonged bleeding
- Infection
- Incomplete abortion (which may require a follow-up procedure)
- Ongoing pregnancy if the drugs do not work
Surgical Abortion
Surgical abortion is performed in a clinic or hospital setting using suction and/or medical instruments. The specific procedure depends on how far along you are; the more advanced the pregnancy, the more involved it can be.
Possible side effects may include:
- Cramping
- Spotting or bleeding
Possible risks include:
- Cervical damage
- Infection
- Uterine perforation
- Scar tissue that may affect future fertility
- Incomplete abortion requiring follow-up care
Why an Ultrasound Matters First
If you’re considering abortion, it’s essential to confirm your pregnancy with a pregnancy test and an ultrasound first.
Our limited diagnostic ultrasounds determine if the pregnancy is progressing and whether it is located in the uterus, details that impact both your health and available options. You owe it to yourself to gather critical information that will help you make a decision.
Confidential Support
You don’t have to sort through your options alone. Our advocates provide space to ask questions and talk through your situation. Only you can make a decision, and we’ll provide the respect and privacy you need.
